Marquis tries once again for win No. 10
    St. Louis (73-42) at Chicago (55-60), 1:20 p.m. CT
    By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

Jason Marquis will make yet another attempt at win No. 10 on the season when he goes up against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.

Marquis has been up and down lately. Though the Cardinals have lost nine of his last 10 starts, he's turned in some excellent games in that span.

When Marquis has gone bad, however, things have turned against him quickly. In each of his last two starts, he's endured a four-run inning. He needs to limit the damage when he gets in trouble if he's to be successful in his fifth try at double figures in wins.

Marquis' opponent will be Carlos Zambrano -- perhaps the one Cub that Cardinals fans most love to hate. Zambrano's stuff is as nasty as anyone in the National League. The demonstrative right-hander features a power sinker that is almost unhittable when he's going well, and he always seems to pitch well against St. Louis.

Friday's meeting is the second of a four-game series at Wrigley between the two old rivals. Saturday's game has an early 12:20 p.m. CT start, followed by a Sunday night special on ESPN.

    Pitching matchup
    STL: RHP Jason Marquis
    • 9-10, 4.24 ERA in 2005
    • 1-1, 3.32 ERA vs. CHC in 2004

    CHC: RHP Carlos Zambrano
    • 8-5, 3.30 ERA in 2005
    • 1-0, 1.02 ERA vs. STL in 2005

    Player to watch
Good luck finding a Cardinal who hits Zambrano well. But one guy who may have a chance is rookie outfielder John Rodriguez, who hit a homer against Zambrano three weeks ago.

    Quotable
"In '03, we were definitely establishing something. It was very special. There were a lot of changes and it just didn't work out the way, I would think, they [had] planned it. But this team has won four or five out of six times. You kind of look at these guys like the Atlanta Braves. They're going for their [14th] division title, and these guys are not too far behind them." -- Mark Grudzielanek, on the difference between the Cardinals and the Cubs

    Quick hits
Since the start of July, Marquis has three starts in which he pitched at least seven innings, allowed three runs or fewer and the Cardinals lost. ... Marquis leads National League pitchers in runs (nine), hits (21), doubles (six), RBIs (nine), total bases (32) and extra-base hits (eight). ... The Cardinals have won five straight road series. ... Rodriguez has one RBI in his last six starts.

Not a favorable pitching matchup for the Cards. Zambrano has generally owned them, that game where he blew up and drilled Jim Edmonds being an exception.

Which is why we'll probably win tomorrow. 13-5, or something like that.
