Infant who was in stolen car is recovered unhurt
    By Doug Moore
    Of the Post-Dispatch
    08/11/2005

A 1-month-old infant who was in a car stolen in East St. Louis shortly after noon today was found unhurt about 4:30 this afternoon.

Police say the child's mother went inside Moore's Auto and Muffler Repair at 37th and State streets for a few minutes. When she walked back outside, she told police she saw a man getting into her 2004 maroon Mitsubishi Galant.

The child was found at 29th and Louisiana, not far from where the car was stolen. Police took the infant to the East St. Louis police station, where members of the baby's family were waiting.

I heard this on the radio all afternoon. Glad they found the baby.

When will people learn to not leave their children in the car?

The point here would be when will people stop STEALING cars. You can't blame those people because someone STOLE their car.

From the story I heard on the radio, the couple stepped inside a car repair office, where the car was in plain sight, while the baby slept in air-conditioned comfort in the car.

Being from and still living right outside East St. Louis - this is indeed great news.

I had hoped and prayed for this outcome but wasn't sure.

The fault goes to criminal - man I hope they beat there asses good.

However the parents got lucky. Like all of us parents there are situations you can only pray come out okay. It's 100 outside - do you take the kid out in the heat? You certainly should be able to go in an Auto repair shop and not feel your child is in danger if you leave them in the car. In hindsight 2 keys with an auto lock might have given them some protection but who plans on getting jacked at the auto repair.

I drive through an around East St. all the time - I am usually not afraid or apprehensive. I don't consider it anymore dangerous than any other place I go. I was very dismayed when I read about SLU's problems - and I have much more to say on that in the future.

For now - thank God - the baby was found alive and apparently unhurt.

Now a days it's not really smart to leave your car running unattended, anywhere. However, from what was stated by the witnesses, the mother really didn't do anything different than alot of us may would have done. She apparently stopped by an auto repair place to pick up a friend. She stepped inside for only a few moments to get her friend, leaving the AC running for the child. Next thing she knows, all hell breaks loose.

I'm very hard on criminals, however I must give this guys some credit for having a soft spot in his heart. He left the car next to a church, with the engine on, AC running, and hazzard lights flashing.

Thank God, all turned out well.

we had a case here where a woman left her kid in the car as she went into a gym to pay a bill. however the repo guy came to take the car. the kid was got back and they were thinking about pressing charges on the mother.

we also had a guy last wk who left his car running in front of a pawn shop. it was stolen and the police went on a chase. unfortunatly a woman in another car was hit and killed.

hell, i turn off my car when i forget something in my house. i never leave it running and i live on a cul-de-sac.

One winter morning my aunt left her car running so she could have the heat on while the car was warming up when someone stole it.
