NAJAF, Iraq - With four days left until Iraq's leaders have promised a draft constitution, powerful Islamist leaders made a dramatic bid on Thursday to have a big, autonomous Shi'ite region across the oil-rich south. The head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) spelled out his demands to tens of thousands of chanting supporters in the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf.

I would have thought the Kurds would have requested autonomy first. Isn't it inevitable that Iraq will be divided into 3 countries?

Hell with 3 countries, make it 4. Kurdistania, Shi'itiaway, Sunnimalia, and Bushland. No president wants war. Everything you may have heard is that, but it's just simply not true

This will not happen, they will all live peacefully side by side, there will be flowers and candy in the streets, oil will pave the way for a country built in our likeness. Democracy will sooth the savage beast...
Who the fuck thought this wouldn't happen, they have hated and been at war with each other for fucking longer than we have been a country.
And after they do it, after they set it all up and hate us, and are a haven for people we don't like we will not be able to say a fucking word to the rest of the world about it because we set it up.Be passionate about what you believe in, or why bother.

If we didn't need their oil...I wouldn't give a shit.
A shame we didn't get our asses in gear on alternative sources back in 1974 during the first OPEC embargo.

We don't need their oil. Production in Iraq is way down from 1991 levels. We can do without Iraq's production. What we can't do without is the whole Middle East. If Iraq's upcoming civil war is contained within its borders, we don't need to give a shit.
And maybe an Iraqi civil war has never been seen as a bad thing by some of the people steering this ship?
