How many people think the Cardinals will give him the 8-10 million and bring him back?

Carpenter will be back, Mulder will be back, Marquis is arbitration eligible, Suppan and Morris are both FAs. Reyes further solidifies a spot in next years rotation after his performance the other night. Basically over the next 2 years all of Carpenter, Mulder, Morris, and Marquis are going to be due significant raises/long term deals...so who stays and who doesn't? I'm not sure the Cardinals can afford all three of Carpenter, Mulder, and Morris. I think Tony and Duncan would love to rid themselves of Marquis after the season, but even though he is due a raise, he is still going to be relatively cheap for the next 2 years...but with that said, he is one of the Cardinals best trading chips...
You're being fucking dramatic. You own a TV and an air mattress. That's not exactly what I'd call "a lot to lose."

To me, it's probably going to boil down to an either or proposition w/ Morris and Marquis....

The problem is, Morris will likely cost 3-4 million dollars more per year then Marquis (at least over the next 2 years), and you also have to give him a long term deal...

Is Morris that much better then Marquis?

Well, which Morris is the real one: the guy who pitched great in the first half, winning nearly his first ten decisions? Or is he the guy that's been scuffling since the break, giving up long balls semi-regularly?

Thinking more aboot it: I'd probably let Morris walk, trade Marquis and take your chances w/ Reyes and a free agent arm...

I don't think Morris is here next year. Unless he cuts a huge hometown discount. Big. You have to pay another outfielder at some point.

            Carp
            Mulder
            Reyes
            Marquis
            ?

It's hard to keep 5 good starters around. We've had some good deals by injury and trade to get ours the last few.

I can't see Marquis getting more than $6 million per year.

That being said, I don't think it comes down to who they want between Marquis and Morris...

I think it comes down to who's on the FA market.

If there aren't any OFs worth signing on the FA market, Marquis will almost certainly be the biggest trade chip in trading for a corner OF this offseason...meaning the Cards will make a push for Morris.

If there aren't any other big FA pitchers available this offseason, Morris will get some big offers and will likely end up playing for the Yankees.

In short, I think it's entirely possible that both Morris and Marquis are elsewhere next season...and we'll have a new mid-level pitcher here.

it'll be interesting to see how the Cardinals reshape the team in the offseason. The budget is in great shape, for alot of reasons, 1 being the new stadium, 2 being the extra money from the playoffs once again, 3 being that Suppan, Walker, and Sanders are all FAs at seasons end, 4 being that Reyes is able to step into the rotation and be a much cheaper solution at the 5th starter spot than Suppan currently is...

anyone know if any good OFers are hitting free agency after the season?

did grudzielanek sign a 1 or 2 year deal?

                    1 year.

They really ought to push him for an extension now....

I agree w/ most of what you said w/ some mild disagreement on the bolded part...the money that would be potentially offered to them could easily make it an either or proposition....

I'm going to assume OF-wise, they'll keep Sanders around and fill that other spot via trading Marquis or signing an OF FA....

The free agent crop is really weak this year. The only really good outfielder available is Damon and Morris will probably be the second most sought after starting pitcher, behind Burnett.

The only position of strength in free agency is closer, where Wagner and Ryan are both free agents.

We just signed our ace to a 2 year deal, worth $6.5 million per year. I don't want the team to spend 8-10 million a year on Morris if it comes to that. I also hope the Cardinals can trade Marquis next year for an outfielder. Morris seems like he would take less to stay here, so who knows.

I thought he'd take less too, but he's on record as stating that he's given enough the Cardinals enough of a discount over the years and i don't blame him....
