  • On Bird and Magic

America was enthralled with Magic and Bird, and has been enthralled with them ever since then. And the same factors that made their rivalry a classic when they became, respectively, a Laker and Celtic, helped make their college face-off a seminal event, a tsunami of hype that culminated in the 24.1 rating that has yet to be topped either by an NCAA or NBA game.
Yet no game has approached the rating of Bird vs. Magic. Last year's Syracuse-Kansas final was barely half of the game a quarter-century ago, 12.6.
Well written and very well researched.

I saw this game on ESPN Classic a few nights ago. Bird and Magic were on another level compared to the rest of the guys on the floor.

Indiana State played Drake during the year they went to the title and a guy from East St. Louis Alex Gilbert played with Bird so you know I didn't miss that game. I remember when Bird was warming up the whole team catered to him. It seemed everybody did basic drills and then Bird would go and just shoot long jumpers with everybody else just making sure they didn't get in his way and that he got a ball to shoot with. He was a phenomenal talent - College center height and the ability to nail the deep ball.
