  • Roster moves!

    http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/st...ter+takes+shape

Lots and lots of good info in this story. Luna looks like he will make it. McKay looks like he might make it. The last roster spot might come down to Widger vs. Hart. I think I would just as soon see them send Hart to Memphis, keep Widger as the backup catcher, and use McKay as the backup 1B/3B (although this will no doubt have people going apeshit and screaming "three catchers!!!", even if McKay gets little or no time at catcher).

Simo gets the nod over Kiko. I'm a little disappointed, but Simo has had a better spring, and he can give the team more innings and the occasional spot start. Maybe it won't be a bad thing for Calero to get work in Memphis. If he still shows the form he flashed last season, he'll earn his way back to the big club, or he can be used for a trade.

Speaking of trades, the article also suggests that there's so much pitching at Memphis that the Cards might swing a trade within the week.

Kiko wasn't ready from getting his arm back in shape...I think it was a good move to have him down there @ Memphis...

      From the article...

A logjam of starters - Jason Ryan, Dan Haren, Rhett Parrott, Benes, Calero and Adam Wainwright - suggests a potential trade in the next week.

Now...there are 3 pitchers there you SHOULD not trade...the others are very suspect..Benes...who wants him?? Calero..maybe...

You can not trade Haren, Parrott and Wainright...

I think most other teams have = or better talent down on the farm than the Cards..

I just dont see too many clubs getting excited over guys that are expendable (Wainright and Parrott are not expendable)

I am still bowled over by the notion the Cardinals feel they have an excess of pitching. But it is nice to know that if some of the guys we have now don't work out, we have Dan Haren, Calero, and possibly a rejuvenated Alan Benes waiting in the wings.

I also like Taguchi on the roster, since I took him with my very last fantasy baseball pick.

I can't recall a weaker Cardinal bench. The last two spots are between Hart, a clubhouse mascot with marginal ability beyond AA, and a coach's son? Neither of them are hitting .200 in the spring games.

It makes me wonder if Tony is serious about winning this year or just making his last Cardinal stand some sort of fuzzy feel good thing.

That's the disappointing thing - TLR is actually trying to win.
“I’ve always stated, ‘I’m a Missouri Tiger,’” Anderson said March 13 after Arkansas fired John Pelphrey, adding, “I’m excited about what’s taking place here.”

Asked then if he would talk to his players about the situation, he said, “They know me, and that’s where the trust comes in.

He and Hawksworth will still be in AA. That's nothing to be worried about, as AAA pitchers are usually more of the career minor leaguer type. The real prospects only go through AAA for a short time to get a little more seasoning.

Can someone please explain to me why in the hell Cody McKay is going to make this club. Unless I'm missing something, I just don't see what he has done to earn a spot on the bench.

I have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one, 007. I don't think you give up two quality young pitchers for a backup first baseman. Are you joking?
                        Are you on the list?

                          I don't get it either.

The rationale seems to be that he's a lefthanded hitter who is versatile (no one ever really says he's GOOD, mind you) defensively.
                          I'm always right.
