I suspect there will be a variety of creative responses to this :-)

However, it's a meaningfull subject to a 'closet Catholic' like me. I gave up meat. (Have your easy humor fun juvenile boys).

But I'm about to leave again for a month over to Sweet Home England and it will be the HARDEST part of the Lent commitment because the sausages, steak and kidney pies, the curries, the (well I'm torturing myself).

So, it's a week of pure denial.

    Will I make it?

    Of course.

But the fish and chip shop near my local will have memorized my credit card number by then.
Congratulations DaLode, I know it is tough and I have faith in you, you can do it! I gave up soda and sweets and it has been tough. But we know that it is meaningful to sacrifice in order to prepare for Easter. It really makes you prepare and makes you realize what it's all about when you think about why you are sacrificing.

I have also given up arguing with others about the merits of sacrificing because some people just don't understand the merits of Lent. I appreciate your seriousness and a few others on here and hope you have a wonderful trip across the pond. Have a great trip and a Joyful Easter.

This has always been a problem for me because I am a meat and potatoes guy. I don't eat seafood per say except tuna and shrimp. I really get tired of tuna casserole, cheese sandwiches and tomato soup! It was worse when I was a kid, my parents would make me eat fish when they were having it. Actually, when I was a kid we had to abstain from meat every Friday, not just Lent. Yech! We have it pretty easy now days.

        I've done it for years.

In fact, last Friday, I had 3 different kind of animals for dinner at a BBQ place.... and it was great.

My wife just made me aware that I gave up sex for Lent. I'm seeking confirmation on this, but I wasn't even aware that I was Catholic.
If you believe in something sacrifice a hobo to it or don't bother.

Only one more week, Lode (not counting this week, of course). So one week of fish 'n chips gets you three weeks of steak and kidney pies. Not a bad deal.

BTW, I've never heard the Carmelite chapel on Clayton Road called a "closet" before, but you could certainly find worse places to hide.

I gave up desserts and my wife gave up alcohol. To make things easier, I continue to consume either two beers or two glasses of wine at every dinner, and she continues to bake delicious cakes and pies.

              We help eachother.

I've never understood the "giving up for Lent" that the Catholic Church goes through. Nothing in the Bible about it...Although I DO understand prayer and fasting (having had it drummed into my head by my paternal grandfather, the AOG evangelist)...what's the history there? Is it somewhat related to "humbling oneself in the sight of the Lord"?

No list of the Canon in the Bible either, dog. But that's another issue entirely.

Developing temperance, humility, perseverance, self-control, discipline against temptation, etc. - all good.

                        All in short supply today.
