  • GDT: Edmonton @ Blues 7:00 p.m. 3/30

GAME: Edmonton Oilers (35-27-12-5) at St. Louis Blues (37-28-11-2).
    TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. CST.

There are only three playoff spots left in the Western Conference playoff race.

The Edmonton Oilers and St. Louis Blues would like to each secure one of them.

Edmonton and St. Louis both look to move closer to earning a postseason berth when they meet at the Savvis Center.

The Oilers and Blues are tied for seventh place in the conference with 87 points, and are three points behind the sixth-place Calgary Flames. The Nashville Predators are two points behind both Edmonton and St. Louis in ninth place.

Edmonton continued to pile up points, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2 at home Sunday. The Oilers have won two straight and have earned at least one point in 16 straight games (10-0-2-4).

Petr Nedved, acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Rangers, had a goal and two assists, while Fernando Pisani chipped in a goal and an assist to lead the Oilers.

"As a group, we get the job done," Nedved said. "Everybody chipped in and that's how we've been winning here - everybody plays the role, everybody plays hard. That's the only way you're going to get on a tear that we've been (on). It's been a lot of fun."

The 32-year-old Czech has five goals and eight assists since arriving from New York.

Pisani opened the scoring by sliding a low shot in on the power play. He has five goals in his last four games and 16 on the season after scoring eight with five assists in 35 games last season following a callup from Hamilton of the AHL.

"I don't recall anything like right now," Pisani said. "I'm getting pucks to the net and they seem to find a way to go in. I'm not going to argue with that. I'm just going to go with it."

St. Louis' playoff streak of 24 years, the longest current run in professional sports, has been in doubt much of the season. The chance that the Blues might miss the playoffs cost coach Joel Quenneville his job on Feb. 24.

Mike Kitchen replaced Quenneville, and the Blues improved to 8-5-4 under him with a 3-1 road win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.

St. Louis took advantage of undisciplined Chicago and scored three times with a two-man advantage. Keith Tkachuk, Petr Cajanek and Brian Savage all got five-on-three goals in the first period.

"When you have five-on-threes, the odds are you're going to score," Savage said. "We've got a lot of snipers on this team. We moved the puck around well. We got a lot of shots from the slot."

Edmonton is winless in its last 10 visits to St. Louis (0-6-3-1) since a 3-2 win on Feb. 13, 1999.

STANDINGS (through March 28): Oilers - 87 points, 4th place, 7 PB, Northwest Division. Blues - 87 points, 2nd place, 16 PB, Central Division.

TEAM LEADERS: Oilers - Ryan Smyth, 22 goals, 36 assists and 58 points; Georges Laraque, 99 PIM. Blues - Tkachuk, 33 goals and 71 points; Doug Weight, 49 assists; Mike Danton, 141 PIM.

    SPECIAL TEAMS (through March 28): Oilers - Power play: 12.9 percent (42 for 325), 28th in NHL. Penalty killing: 81.0 percent (272 for 336), 27th. Blues - Power play: 18.1 percent (60 for 331), 8th. Penalty killing: 84.1 percent (297 for 353), 15th.

    GOALTENDERS: Oilers - Ty Conklin (16-13-4, 1 SO, 2.39 GAA); Jussi Markkanen (10-13-3, 2, 2.42). Blues - Chris Osgood (29-24-8, 2, 2.28); Reinhard Divis (4-3-2, 2.84).

    SEASON SERIES: 1-1-1.

LAST MEETING: March 4; 1-1. At St. Louis, Alexander Khavanov scored his first goal in 63 games to give the Blues a 1-0 lead at 1:42 of the third period, but Raffi Torres' goal midway through the period tied it for Edmonton.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Oilers - 13-15-8-2 on the road; Blues - 22-10-7-0 at home.

That Chicago/Nashville game should be interesting. Those are both really hard working, blue collar teams....

I predict a great 40 minutes of hockey from the Blues. The key for the Oil will be capitalizing on the Blues tendencies to take shifts off later in the game...

That's why the Blues are so fun to watch this year. You never know which team will show up in the third period.
