Pearl Jam can not touch this

    Pink Houses
There’s a black man with a black cat
    Living in a black neighbourhood
He’s got an interstate runnin’ through his front yard
You know, he think, that he’s got it so good
And there’s a woman in the kitchen cleanin’ up the evening slop
And he looks at her and says: hey darling, I can remember when you could stop a clock

    Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

    Well there’s a young man in a t-shirt
Listening to a rockin’ rollin’ station
He’s got a greasy hair, greasy smile
He says: lord, this must be my destination
’cuz they told me, when I was younger
    Boy, you’re gonna be president
But just like everyting else, those old crazy dreams
    Just kinda came and went

    Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Well there’s people and more people
What do they know know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the gulf of mexico
    Ohhh yeah
And there’s winners, and there’s losers
But they ain’t no big deal
’cuz the simple man baby pays for the thrills,
The bills and the pills that kill

    Chorus:
Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

Oh but ain’t that america for you and me
Ain’t that america we’re someting to see baby
Ain’t that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

no way Pearl Jam touches this either.....

Well I lived on the outskirts of town
In an eight room farmhouse, baby
When my brothers and friends were around
        There was always somethin' doin'
Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends
Stopped by to see me every once in a while
When I think back about those days
All I can do is sit and smile

        That's when a sport was a sport
        And groovin' was groovin'
        And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
        Laughin', laughin' with our friends
        Holdin' hands meant somethin', baby
        Outside the club"Cherry Bomb"
        Our hearts were really thumpin'
        Say yeah yeah yeah
        Say yeah yeah yeah

The winter days they last forever
But the weekends went by so quick
Went ridin' around this little country town
We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks
One night, me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say do you remember when

        Chorus

        Say yeah yeah yeah
        Say yeah yeah yeah

        Seventeen has turned thirty-five
I'm surprised that we're still livin'
        If we've done any wrong
        I hope that we're forgiven
Got a few kids of my own
And some days I still don't know what to do
I hope that they're not laughing too loud
        When they hear me talkin'
        Like this to you

        Chorus

Pearl Jam has influenced a large amount of current musicians. Many more than Mellencamp.

Pearl Jam has atleast 3 all time great albums and they have never made a bad one. Cannot say that for Mellencamp. Add intheir B-side work which one could argue is some of their best stuff and Pearl Jam is the hands down winner.

Also I think you have to weigh in the other projects that members of PJ have been. Green River, the great Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Brad just to mention a few. PJ band members total body of work stand up against nearly any musician or band since the advent of rock n roll

to all pearl jam fans, produce some lyrics that can touch the style and/or power of mellencamp and i will back off. The guy can write and has politicaly charged lyrics, he is also a leader in the maligned Farm Aid concerts. In other words he has done something with his celebrity, unlike eddie vedder (sp?). And torch IMO his stuff is way better than the wanna be Nirvana of PJ.

                I agree with Davhaf.....Kaiser March 9,2004

Mick Jagger is in better shape than far too many NBA players. It's up in the air whether the same can be said of Keith Richards.

I want to fire blanks in Tyra Banks
I like shorn quim lasses in horn-rimmed glasses
                  but Cindy Crawford ...offered
I would keep a tidy room for Heidi Klum
I'm immersed in Kirstie Alley's thirsty valley

I want a smelly slice of Kelly Price
Plus get with the hairy scar of Teri Garr

                  Winona Ryder? Going inside her!
I want to get on the whole width of Anna Nicole Smith

temujin here is the whole song:

                      Jack and Diane
Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
2 American kids growin up in the heartland.
Jacky goin' be a football star
                      Diane's debutante--backseat of Jacky's car

Suckin' on chili dog outside the Tastee Freeze
Diane sittin' on Jacky's lap, got his hands between her knees
Jacky say, "Hey Diane, let's run off hind' shady tree"
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks slacks, now do what I please.

Say uh, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Say uh, oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone. They walk on.

Jacky sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean.
Well then there and Diane, gotta run off to the city
Diane says "Baby, you ain't missin' nothing"
                      Jacky say uh,

                      Oh yeah life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Gonna let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt, come and save my soul
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon, make us women and men.

                      Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone
Oh yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Little ditty, about Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin' best they can

                        Turd's gotta be about 30... possibly 32...just a guess.

This was actually a tough decision for me. Where I had a teen fixation on Eddie Vedder, I thought everything after "vs" was sheer crap.

On the other hand, I am not a fan of Mellencamp either. But, I do respect that a singer/songwriter such as himself can be successful on his blue-collar midwestern image that he has *never* strayed from. I can't honestly say he's a large "influence" on music today, but he stands as an important musical figure in an industy that constantly creates, destroys, and recreates artists at will.
