You can have one drummer, one bass player, 2 guitarists, one keyboard player, and 2 horns. One or two lead singers. 2 miscellaneous additions, and subtractions in the lineup as you see fit. I know I want Clapton and Joplin. Don't know for sure after that.

Sinatra or the Beatles? No horns yet, not many keyboards. Not sure who to blame or credit for this mindset that a band is 2 guitars, bass, and drums. Before Sinatra, there were magazines devoted to jazz with annual polls about who was best on everything from drums to trombone. Musicians like Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington were dominant forces, and singers were just a minor instrument. The last instrumental hit I can remember is "Frankenstein" about 30 years ago. Sinatra, then Elvis, then the Beatles helped make everything vocal oriented. Harry Connick doesn't have much of a chance against the American Idol concept. Glad you are at least thinking of specific drummers and guitar players.v
