Sent my Teddy on his way in December of 1999.
And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

          TarHeel,

Mine will be 3 in September.

Will he still be a puppy?

Damtoft, they'll always be puppies. It felt like yesterday that Leia was 6 months old and my family just got her. Time just freakin' flies.

            Best. Dogs. Ever.

Unfortunately, she's with the fam, 500 miles away. 'Toft, give yours a big hug and a kiss on the nose for me!!!

Golden's are the finest, most sensitive dogs on earth. I raised 5 kids with one that, protectively and without instruction, instinctively layed across the top of the stairs when my kids were crawling and toddlers............just to protect them.

              Sweetest dogs ever.

Again, the trade-off is the thousands of dollars that you spend on masking tape getting their hair off of every carpet and piece of furniture in the house.

Also, they have a great MEAN bark.

15 years with that sweet Golden and I still can't look at the videos where he's 'starring' in them i.e. Christmas and birthdays.

              Best breed.

                Couldn't have said it better.

Though I don't have kids just yet. :P

FunKay, isn't it a dark spot, devoid of emotion in your life where your dog used to be? Go get a puppy tomorrow!!! You know you want to!

THB, if it was up to me, i'd have that rott/german shep named max and a weneramer named daisy. unfortunatly because of my broken legs, i need to learn how to walk and get back to normal first. but yes, its a major void. i drop stuff on the floor and expect my dog to come over and get it, but alas, nada :(

My dog of close to 16 years died while I was in IRE for my college graduation...

She managed to live from August of 82 (purchased February 3, 1983) till June of 1999....

For some reason, when I dropped her off @ the kennel when we left (my mom was in Argentina to tend to the death of her mom), I thought it would be the last time I'd see her....

Still bothers me till this day....

That probably would be worse than putting a pet to sleep, like we did to our cat in St. Charles back in '93. At least we had time to prepare for it.

My dad hit her when we were coming back from a great day at Six Flags. It was dark, and she ran out. Not really his fault. But man, what a crappy way to end a great day... :(

Someone sent me that link when my Grey passed away. I can't look at it again.

I will, however, take the time to advocate the adoption of retired racing greyhounds. They are the best dogs, hands down. I know everyone has their favorite breed, but no one I've ever spoken to has disliked a grey after spending some time with one. They are gentle, funny, lazy, and full of love and appreciation. They know that you've given them a home as opposed to the fate that was awaiting them after their racing years had passed.

If you, or anyone you know is looking for a loving, intelligent, funny and extremely personable dog, please encourage them to make contact with one of the three rescue groups here in town, or check their area for a rescure group. The groups will be more than happy to let them visit with the greys and give them information about them. Everyone looking for a dog should at least consider them.

                          Some misconceptions about greys:

                          1) They are not mean. In fact they are the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. Seriously. Because they were trained to chase after a small furry animal when racing, some will not be good with cats or small dogs. Most, however will, or can learn to be.

                          2) They are not hyper. I've had two myself and fostered many. Greyhounds are sprinters, meaning they exert large amounts of energy in a short time. A brisk walk every day or two, or a quick romp in the yard is more than enough. The rest of the time they will be sleeping on your couch. I'm not exaggerating.

This is a great group to look to if you are interested.
