Uhh.. it really just sounds like they would like to get a new indoor facility. They are saying that if they get that facility, maybe they too will be able to host some of these events.

Kemper is nice but it is not in a good area. Municipal is too small..

Facilities give St. Louis edge over Kansas City in event bidding

They're patting themselves on the back across the state over there.

Last weekend it was the NCAA wrestling championship. This week it is the NCAA regional basketball tournament. Then the Olympic marathon trials on April 3, the swimming and diving trials and the Olympic torch relay in June and the U.S. Senior Open in late July.

          Whew!

But that's not all. In 2005 there will be a Final Four, and in 2006 and '07 the U.S. Figure skating championships and the NCAA Frozen Four college hockey championship.

Between 2000 and 2010 St. Louis will hold seven NCAA championship events. That's more than any city in the country except Omaha, Neb., which has the NCAA baseball tournament every year.

“It all starts and stops with facilities,” said Kevin Gray, president of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission. “I can remember when we were making our presentation for the Frozen Four and so was St. Louis. We just didn't get in the finals because of our facility.

“We still get rave reviews from the 1998 Women's Final Four, and this time around we didn't even get a sniff.”

The presence of the Missouri Valley Conference helps in St. Louis. Kansas City lost a great bargaining chip when the Big Eight conference offices became the Big 12 and moved to Dallas.

So Gray tries to play to his strength. That would be Arrowhead Stadium. The Big 12 championship football game is a huge success here. And he tries to make do with the weakness — the lack of a top-notch arena facility.

“It sort of ebbs and flows on some of these things,” Gray said. “We think if we get a new arena done we are going to be in the rotation for NCAA events … whether Frozen Four, Women's Final Four.

“But we are fighting with one hand tied behind our back in regards to Kemper.

“We're looking at creating some of the youth events that bring in moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas that the hotels and restaurants love,” Gray said. “It's not so much publicity like a regional would be, but it's more in the economics. We have to look at new and different opportunities.”

No, it's called competition. They are right, with a new downtown facility, Kansas City would be much more attractive than St. Louis for these events.
Asked what he would do differently in Iraq, Kerry said, "Right now, what I would do differently is, I mean, look, I'm not the president, and I didn't create this mess so I don't want to acknowledge a mistake that I haven't made."

              I love Kemper.

Maybe they should look at clearing up the surrounding area instead of fleeing to the 'burbs with another 150M arena.

Speaking of a "bad area," I'll never forget my trips to the Dome in STL when its not a "big event" and the police haven't cleared the streets of the "homeless" and "destitute."

Shakedowns that would do Jesse Jackson proud.

I am going to KC this year to see the Cards play the royals.

I expect to see more '85 high fives and stuff among those fans. But, we shouldn't think they're idiots for doing that cos you know we Cardinal fans still give eachother the '82 high fives when we play the brewers, don't we?

We should beat the Brewers everytime we face them. No point living in the past about that.
