Indeed, Philly union workers gave the show's producers a reception that was neither brotherly nor loving after Bunim-Murray hired non-union workers to renovate a former bank into a lavish loft meant to house the pampered roomies.

For two weeks, Teamsters, painters, carpenters and electricians picketed in front of the future Real World digs with signs and a giant inflatable rat.
    Classy.

I thought the rat was hilarious, personally....

        007:

What's the inference behind the rat? That the non-union workers would do crappy work, thus leading to rat infestations?

I feel like I'm missing something obvious here and am about to get a forehead-slapper of an answer...

My guess would be that they 'smelled a rat'....

            Oh. Probably.

I wonder if the Teamsters rented for this occasion or actually own a giant inflatable rat that they routinely trot out in situations like this...

They were in Philly before? I lost it after the first season and when around when MTV stoped playing videos.

No. They were here and left when the unions gave them a hard time for using non-union workers. But now they are coming back.
