  • consequences of banning tobacco

Kind of wondered whose ox would be gored if we simply banned the possession and sale of tobacco---or nicotine. Let's see---400,000 deaths, but that saves money on social security payout, but they run up healthcare costs before they die, and what about victims of second hand smoke, but how much tax revenue would be lost, and what about black market tobacco sale, what about problems for law enforcement, what about the effect on people who smoke to keep their weight down, what about the freedom to choose, but what about people who think watching people put things in their mouths that will eventually kill them is more obscene than Janet Jackson and Howard Stern.

Good topic, I'd like to see it banned, but for some of your points I agree it would be bad and or hard to do.

It's the hypocrisy of No to Pot, but Yes to Tobacco that gets me the most I guess.

They should both be legal. We don't need another black market.
Asked what he would do differently in Iraq, Kerry said, "Right now, what I would do differently is, I mean, look, I'm not the president, and I didn't create this mess so I don't want to acknowledge a mistake that I haven't made."

The tax revenue is the killer in banning it.

If you ban something, people immediately stop doing it.

          It's true.

Wait until the trial lawyers figure out how to haul in another billion or so and that's what will happen.
And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

Why would anyone smoke something that makes them feel worse, as opposed to feeling better? Absurd.

If they ban tobacco, lawyers will go to work for the drug companies who will haul in a boatload of cash peddling anti-depressants for those suffering from "Pete Harnish Syndrome."

I'm a non smoker. I wish everyone was. But, I'm against banning tobacco. Why? When I see some of my co-workers standing outside in wind chill factors of -30, just to take a few drags, I realize just how obsessed they are.

I look to the govt to tell me what's best for me. I think that's the easiest way to live and stuff. Or whatever. And then I don't have to be bothered with choices.
