  • Proposed trade for Brian Roberts

Which would be cool, since I drafted him for the fantasy league.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...v=tsn&type=lgns

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts for Cardinals righthander Danny Haren.
It might seem counterproductive for the pitching-hungry Cardinals to trade Haren, but they badly need a second baseman and leadoff hitter, and the additions of righthanders Jason Marquis and Adam Wainwright in the J.D. Drew trade created newfound pitching depth.

The Cardinals were stunned when free agent Roberto Alomar rejected their offer of more than $2 million and signed with the Diamondbacks for $650,000, plus $350,000 deferred without interest. Roberts, 26, is 10 years younger than Alomar, more affordable and a switch hitter. The Orioles still would be set at second with Jerry Hairston and prospect Mike Fontenot, who got off to a big start this spring.

Haren, 23, would fit nicely with the Orioles' growing stable of talented young arms. The Cardinals almost certainly would prefer to trade a lesser pitcher such as Class AAA righthander Rhett Parrott. If the Orioles were set on Haren, the Cardinals could demand a minor league pitcher in return.

From what I've seen of Haren and with Woodrow and maybe Morris going after this year, I don't think I'd do it, though it is tempting.

Roberts is a career .258 hitter with a .316 OBP.

We're better off with Anderson or Hart @ 2B.

        Tough call on this one.

Cards don't have much to trade except young pitching. I'd rather keep Haren than trade him for Roberts, though. But I can certainly see the reason to do this deal.
        I'm always right.

The Cards have no need to give up young pitching to pick up Roberts, who is no better than Anderson or Hart

I think Roberts is better than Anderson/Hart, but probably not by a wide enough margin to justify giving up Haren.

              Good points.

If it were say 85-mph Bud Smith, sure. But Haren can bring it - you gotta keep those guys around.

                Another fantastic offseason, Walter.

Marlon Anderson was the best you could do? Then, we get to Spring and you realize he sucks?

So now you want to go and trade our young pitchers for a mediocre (at best) 2b and leadoff hitter? Is he *that* much better than Anderson?

And for that matter, if you were going to deal for a second baseman, why not do it it in the offseason? Why even waste the money on Anderson?

Its not like you didn't know what Anderson was capable of. We all knew he wasn't the answer.

For fuck's sake, Walter....... With Morris and Wiliams likely gone next year, we need TONS of young pitching and hope that a few of them are capable big leaguers.

You can't trade it away for..... for what?

If I'm giving up Haren, I'd rather go after Carl Crawford.

Not saying you are, but playing devil's advocate.... What reason is there to give up on Haren?

He was rushed to the club last season and did an "ok" job.

                    Why give up on him?

Don't you think it would take more than Haren to get Crawford?

I'm not sure I'd give up Haren for him.

But I might, since he's younger and plays OF.

I wouldn't want to, but I'd be much more inclined to do so for him. There's no way I would for Roberts.

Crawford's five years away from free agency, has a huge upside, has already shown improvement, is a LH hitter, can play CF if needed (and will be needed) and can hit at the top of the lineup.
