  • Experts: War on terrorism could spawn new enemies

Splinter groups may rise from crackdown on al Qaeda, they warn

"This is more like a mass movement, and you can arrest as many people as you want. But it's very hard to arrest the movement of ideas."

"We do know that there is a connection to al Qaeda. We have verified that," said Asa Hutchinson, U.S. undersecretary for homeland security. "The extent of responsibility and whether any other terrorist organization is involved has yet to be determined."

It is possible the U.S.-led war on terror has created new enemies of Western governments and societies by splintering al Qaeda, according to counterterrorism experts
Question. If the new enemies are from a splintered al Qaeda, weren't they always our enemy? They are not really new. They seem to be the same ones, without the organization of the past.

Both government and private experts are bracing for what they say will be a war that could last for generations.
Oh, in that case, we should definitely give up. That is much too scary to address or think about.

There has been unrest and fighting in the middle eat since the beginning of time, and there'll unrest when the earth finally goes away.

I find it very foolhardy for the US to think that they can put a permanent stop to this historical conflict.

What's foolhardy is going in and making things far worse than they've ever been.

I agree the world is "generally" a better place "without Saddam Hussein", but in his place Iraq has been turned into "terrorist fun land".

Saddam may be gone, but the world is definitely not a better place.
