  • Cowboys get Drew Henson from Texans

Cowboys | Land Henson; Eight-year Deal Agreed To - from www.KFFL.com
    Fri, 12 Mar 2004 16:07:00 -0800

SportsLine.com's Jay Glazer after shipping a third-round draft choice to the Houston Texans for QB Drew Henson, the Dallas Cowboys reached an agreement on an eight-year deal with Henson. The deal will void to four years if he plays in 15 percent of the Cowboys' snaps this season. Henson will earn $3.5 million in guaranteed money whether or not the deal voids. If he voids the deal, he'll receive the entire $3.5 million after next season. If he doesn't void the deal, he'll receive the money over eight-years.

Devaskar adds: the third-round pick is in 2005.

Dallas didn't give up much for him at all. Third-round pick. And he only gets $3.5 million in guaranteed money over four or eight years. Nice deal by them.

Yep. I thought Parcells was going to look for a vet.

He still might be, although I don't think there is a good veteran available anymore, unless the Rams decide to get rid of Bulger for whatever reason.

They're (obviously) buzzing on the sports talk shows right now down here.

It's also being opined that either the details of the contract are way off (i.e. money being reported is way too low), or the 'Pokes may have gotten a steal due to many teams thinking all the hoops that had to be jumped through to make the trade and get the contract done were just too much trouble.

Also, the rumor is buzzing that Quincy will start this year (it's his final contract year) and then be gone, and that Testaverde will be brought in as a backup in case Q-Car gets hurt.

I guess they think Henson will be ready to start after one year. Or maybe if Vinny does end up in Dallas, he'll start next year, with Henson backing up.

I wish the Niners had made this deal. And as a Henson fan, I'm mad that he's going to be a Cowboy. Out of all the non-NFC West teams, Dallas was the one place I most was hoping he wouldn't end up.

I realize he was projected as the potential number one pick in the draft before going to the Yankees, but it makes me nervous that the guy has had a layoff from football for awhile. If the $3.5 million is the only thing guaranteed, then they don't stand to lose alot if he busts.

According to the ESPN.com article, his 2004 salary is only $238,000. His cap charge for this season will only be about $1 million.

As an aside, Henson is a much better gamble than Chad Hutchinson was. Henson was twice the college quarterback Hutchinson was, and in a much tougher conference.

Oh, absolutely. Chutch couldn't locate the plate for the Cardinals...not sure why they thought he could locate a receiver...

I loved Henson when he was with Michigan and I was pretty miffed that a guy with that kind of potential went for the Yankee money and non-contact sport. My gut tells me that anyone who doesn't love football will never be a dominant or even good pro player. He obviously chose baseball first and he's been away from the sport for 3 years. I will be surprised if he's ever more than an average QB in the NFL.

I think it's unfair to suggest that he doesn't love football just because he might have loved baseball more. You don't get to be as good as Henson was without having a love for the sport.

On a side note, this means that I can't root for the total destruction of the Cowboys. And if they end up drafting Chris Perry, which is a distinct possibility, I might actually have to start liking them. Torture.

Wonder what that does to the Bulger to the Burgh rumor?
