  • DeWitt: Signing Renteria is the next priority

Posted by Bernie at The Box:

Post subject: DeWitt Jr. and Pujols interviews

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just had them both on from 6:30-7 on KMOX.

Pujols is happy (obviously). Says it was important to him to take less in the first 2 years (he gets $18 milliion combined) and also to defer $3 million in each of the final four years of his deal in order to give the Cardinals some breathing space on the payroll...because he wants to win and he knows they'll need to go get some players....he also acknowledged (when I asked) that he'll have to guard against putting extra pressure on himself to do even more in an effort to justify the big money....said he'd like to be like Stan the Man and play his entire career here.

As fpr DeWitt, he said (when I asked) that signing Renteria is the next order of business. The next priority. Says they've had preliminary talks with ER's agent...(won't be cheap; Tejada got $72 million over 6 years from the Orioles)...I told DeWitt that fans were distraught that the team didn't sign Maddux or another starter and asked if the owners would provide Jocketty with additional funds if the team is in the race and needs to make a deal near the deadline to close the gap. He said yes, they'd have some room to do that (but didn't say how much).

Just wanted to provide the basic conversation points.

    Cheers,
    Bernie
I wonder where that leaves Morris...probably on the Yankees or Mets.

Thanks for posting. While I appreciate this, hope about some freaking pitching?

I think their plan to build around Pujols, Renteria and Rolen while 'growing their own' pitching.

Risky plan if they plan to keep TLR and Duncan considering their track record with young pitchers consists of Morris and some one year wonders.

I'm not sure, and I honestly don't think Chris will make it anyway since we have a $100 million man at first for the next several years. That doesn't mean Duncan won't hold on for a little while longer "just in case" he does make it.

It's comforting to know that St. Louis has an elite player in town who wants to do everything he can to win and stay in St. Louis.

It can only help the team, it's fans, and ultimately the city.

It'll be years whether we know the Cardinals did the right thing in re-signing Pujols. If they commit the necessary money to build a winner around him, then it was a good move. If not, they would've been better off moving him.

We'll find out down the line.

                    Grote,

In the eyes of DeWitt we do have pitching. Their names are Hawksworth, Wainswright, Narveson and Haren.

DeWitt would not have gone public with the fact they are going to try to sign Renteria if they didn't have a better than average cahnce to sign him (they are all about PR and would not want to get into the business of wiping egg off of their face).

Where does this leave Morris? Steinbrenner's New York Yankees-which makes me sick.

From a commerce standpoint, just think of how many people will be coming downtown to watch Pujols and the Cardinals take on [ insert team here ]?

I do love watching the guy hit.

Someday our kids will tell their grandchildren they saw the great Albert Pujols hit.

                      He is that good.

He has no weaknesses at the plate. He has not even peaked yet.
