  • Bulger to Steelers?

Whispers are coming out of St. Louis and Pittsburgh that the two teams are working on a potential deal that would land Rams Quarterback Marc Bulger back in his hometown.

Bulger, who is 26, had a big year for the Rams despite having just 22 Touchdown passes, to 22 Interceptions. He was also a restricted Free Agent heading into the offseason, but was tendered by the Rams at the highest level for a RFA. If another team wanted to sign Bulger to an offer sheet, it would cost them a 1st round pick, and a 3rd round pick in this years draft. But recent history has shown that most teams are willing to negotiate trades with their RFA's, like the Jets did last year with Laveranues Coles.

The Steelers have been reluctant to give up a 1st round draft pick, instead are offering a 2nd round pick this year, and a 3rd round pick next year for Bulgers services. The Rams apparently are happy with the deal, but the deal hinges on whether the Steelers will be able to match Bulger contract demands. Bulger is seeking a signing bonus in excess of $10 million a year, and a contract with a $5 million per year average. Not a bad price for a Pro Bowl Quarterback.

If the Rams indeed dealt Bulger to the Steelers, that would clear up the $1.82 million of cap space taken up by Bulgers tender this season. It would also clear the way for former MVP Kurt Warner.

Don't look so fast though, because as reported prior, Head Coach Mike Martz might have his eye on another Quarterback. If not for next year, then definitely for the long term.

I have no idea about this guy's credibility. Today is the first time I have seen this site, but Bulger would be a perfect fit in Pittsburgh since that is where he is from and they are in desperate ned of a QB. That leaves us with KW and maybe trying to trade for Drew Henson.

I've heard the Rams are seriously thinking about Drew Henson for their first round pick.

I bet the Texans will try to get more than that for him. Don't know if it will work, but I bet they try.

Trade Bulger to Pitt, use their picks to get Henson?

        Could/Should we go after Couch?

Couch is a bad option. He couldn't take the beating in Cleveland. He won't be able to take it here.

He's a younger Warner....solid passer, but not as good as he once was because of the accumulation of injuries. I'd pass.

If we get Henson, next year will be a throw away year at 4-12.

Warner will be the primary guy until he goes 1-7 and Henson gets nod and goes 3-5.

What a mistake Martz is making.

It's an even-numbered season. We're screwed no matter what we do.

It isn't injuries that has been Couch's problem; he's just never been very good. He's always been extremely indecisive which has led to him taking more hits than he needs to and making bad decisions.

He could very well rehab himself and be a great quarterback in the second half of his career, like several guys have done in recent years. But he needs a coach who knows how to protect the quarterback. Martz would be horrible for him.

As for this whole Pittsburgh trade scenario, the Rams would pretty much be writing off the 2004 season if they made that deal but, if Henson ends up being as good as I think he will be, the Rams could be in a decent position to make a run from 2006-2009.

The mistake was made when the gave over the hill Warner that fat long term contract.

By the way, as good as I think Henson will be, the Rams would be crazy to deal a first- or second-round pick for him. They need those picks to build their defense in a bad way. Right now, they have three question marks along the defensive line and one at cornerback. I'm not so sure their defense is any better than third in the division.

They should keep Bulger, keep the draft picks, and swallow hard on the cap hit by cutting Warner on June 1.

The thing is, Martz has no confidence in Bulger.

                      Or Warner.

And if Martz has no confidence in them, he can't play them.

He's got to get himself a new QB -- the rest of the team be damned.

NO COUCH! For the love of the gods, no Couch, please!

I think the Steelers need to buck up with that #1 pick if they want Bluger. It sucks that the Rams would cave in like that.

I couldn't care less if Bulger is traded or not. I think Warner should get the opportunity to win the job back regardless, but Martz has already let it be known he'd love to have Henson. I say the Rams go 8-8 next year.

Casserly is only seeking a 2nd rounder. The difficult part is going to be negotiating a contract. Tom Condon is Henson's agent, and at one point was seeking something like 10 years of guranteed contract.

The mere fact that possibility is being bandied about (and I believe it to be true) indicates the curb-like low degree of believability in ANYTHING Martz says to the media.

Simply put: Martz is never to be believed fan Rams faithful and local media.

If this is the case, it would further indicate Martz' utter lack of confidence in "his man," Bulger. It would also indicate that Martz sacrificed the playoff season in an attempt to prove his point that Bulger was the QB of choice and the future. This "shopping around" of sorts definitely angers me given the fact that Martz could have, and probably should have tested Warner in that pivotal game to see what he had when Bulger continued coming up empty.

Rams Front Office personnel should instead be "shopping around" for a coach worthy of his word and of running this franchise.
