  • Cards fans: Lets have some fun...

    Red vs. Whitey.

If you could match both teams in their prime years (64-69) vs. (81-88) and take the top players from both eras, who would you pick to win a seven game series?

My pick: As much as I loved Vince, Willie, Tommy, and that gang, my money's on Lou, Bob, Orlando, and that bunch.

Com'on folks, let's have a bit of fun with this.......

Can't pick Whitey cause i wasn't old enough to see him manage a team, and I can't pick LaRussa cause he hasn't one a 7 game series for us yet.

I'm going with the 80's...being 37, I was not able to see the teams of the 60's, but I do like Gibby..

I was able to see the series in the 80's...so, that is my favourite...

My favourite Card in that decade...Keith Hernandez (traitor!!)...then, Tommy Herr

      I'm pining for Dane Iorg.

          Bob Gibson.

He is my hero that I never got to see pitch live.

The 60s team would win. The 80s team had no answer to Bob Gibson and Rapid Robert could pitch 3 games in a short series.

Other than that they were probably about even overall with each team having strenghs at different positions.

The team of the '60's would have been one of the greatest of all time had they not pissed away the 1968 Series. Three World Championships in five years!!!

How many of those players went on to great things.

                  Brock-HOF
Flood-Challenged the Reserve Clause (hell of a player)
                  Shannon--Cardinal Broadcaster
                  McCarver-Long Career and national Broadcaster
Bill White-Broadcaster for the Yankees and President of the National League
                  Maxvill-General Manager
                  Gibson-HOF
                  Groat-HOF
                  Maris-HR record for 38(?) years
Boyer-Great Career and one of my favorites
                  Cepeda-HOF
Hell even Uecker played with those guys
Schoendienst--for all of you who don't like lineup changes this was your guy

I'm sure I missed somebody else.

Guess it's obvious I think the 60's team is better hands down.

I think Dal was hamstrung by the tight purse strings.

Dont' forget that Gibson wouldn't pitch if Maxie didn't play short.

If it weren't for Gussie Busch pulling the all-time F-Up, as far as Cardinal baseball lore is concerned, that 60's powerhouse would have carried over through the 70's. I still can't forgive him for dumping Carlton over $5,000 damned bucks.

Good list but I don't recall Groat going into the Hall. He was excellent hitting SS though..at least by his stats. Never saw him play.

the Busch's have somewhat inflated egos...Carlton had one too

You know the result of the mixing.

Yep, a trade almost as bad as our getting Brock from the Cubs
