♫ I am going to be posting several times for you guys. I am on the phone and trading e-mails, with sources right now, trying to gather info. So tonight's info will come in a few different posts. Let us get right to it, shall we?
♫ Just a note for you all. This year has been an especially difficult year to pin down, because some teams are really going for it, and some are completely selling. Last year was fairly easy, and I remember knowing about a lot of deals before they went down. This year? That's not the case. It is hard getting a read on anything. But I will share what has been shared with me since my last visit.
♫ Colin Campbell has seen the Bertuzzi-Moore incident, and thinks he deserves a stiff penalty, but is weighing whether or not to hand one out right before the playoffs. It will be reviewed more tomorrow. Burke would like an answer quickly so he can decide what to do knowing the status of his big power forward. Burke has been on the phone with the league since the moment of the hit, and so has Pierre Lacroix, who is trying to get Bertuzzi suspended for 20 games.
♫ Bob Clarke wants Chris Pronger, but when Larry Pleau asked for Simon Gagne, Joni Pitkanen and two No. 1 picks, Clarke hung up. Pitkanen is untouchable, although I bet Clarke would change his mind if New Jersey were to offer Brodeur for him. Clarke has inquired about Doug Weight and Eric Weinrich, a sign that perhaps he is skeptical about the returns of Keith Primeau and/or Jeremy Roenick. Weinrich however seems unlikely now that the Flyers have landed Vladimir Malakhov. Whether or not he moves, everyone will be checking in with the Blues about Pronger on Tuesday thanks to Larry Brooks and Bruce Garrioch. He is not untouchable, but Pleau would have to get a ridiculous offer to move him.
♫ Northwest Division source on the New York Post report about the Blues braintrust not being on the same page: "Consider the source. Brooks is picking his butt for shit and trying to get you to eat it. The Blues may be dysfunctional, but they're dysfunctional together." All of my sources echo the sentiment. The same goes for the report Pronger is unhappy and wants out. He very much wants to retire a Blue, but he did talk to Pleau and mention a few teams he would like to go to IF Pleau is seriously thinking of trading him. As you would expect, both Ontario teams were on his list.
♫ A source in Detroit tells me the Red Wings will inquire about getting Weight tomorrow, with Datsyuk and Draper out and Lang going down last night.
♫ With regards to both Weight and Pronger, I would be shocked if either are traded. The likelihood of the Blues pulling a deal for a front-line player, or unloading a front-line player: less than 5%. Their additions/subtractions will be of the mid-level or worse variety.
♫ Just like with Pronger, everyone will give the Mighty Ducks one last call, trying to get Keith Carney out of there. Do not expect them to succeed though.
♫ Pleau wants Rucinsky, and privately is kicking himself for not re-signing him last year. He knows he is going to come out looking bad if he has to give up an asset to get a guy who could have kept by just ponying up a few more dollars last summer. He could have done it just by not qualifying Brent Johnson. But it would be surprising if the Blues get him, because at the moment San Jose and Vancouver are jockeying hard for him. San Jose has stepped up efforts with the injury to Sturm, and the O'Neill injury that takes him off the market. LA is still dabbling, but no longer is focused on him after landing Anson Carter. Rucinsky is the most sought after guy on the market right now.
♫ Shawn McEachern is another the Blues were targeting, but so is San Jose, Toronto, and Vancouver, and the Blues appear to be out of luck here.
♫ The Blues were interested in Valeri Bure until he landed in Dallas. Quenneville hated him, but Pleau has always liked him. So now they have turned attention to Kristian Huselias of Florida. The Blues seem to be interested in all the mid-tier scoring wingers (Rucinsky, McEachern, Sykora, Sanderson, etc.) to put on Weight's line.
