  • Jason Ryan

    Ht./Wt.: 6-3/195
    Born: 1/23/76
    Bats/throws: S/R

I couldn't find a pic, but I didn't look all that hard either (just did a google search and went to a few sites only).

Anyway, I like this kid and I hope that he can make the team. I will be interested in seeing him pitch a little more this spring.

Kaiser seemed to think he's worth a shot and I might agree, but that is certainly not to say that Kaiser is right.

He was born when I was 5.5 years old. I went to Disney World with my grandma that year. Doesn't it seem like we have a lot of January birthdays on our team? Weird huh?

If you have any information on Jason Ryan, please post it. Thanks.

Jason, I bet you thought it wouldn't happen, but it is. Today is Jason Ryan Day!

The only info I have is that I think it will take a catastrophe in order for him to make the team.

I don't know why, but that's my feeling.

      You're probably right, Winston.

      Maybe 2005 though?

        I doubt it.

I think its one of those situations where he "doesn't have a future with this organization."

He should have been brought up last year. That was his great opportunity -- or should have been.

I don't see him making the team this year with the likes of Benes.

Looks like it to me, too.

I know it's AAA ball, but a 2.70 ERA in 190 innings is nothing to sneeze at, especially when the major league club needs pitching help on the cheap.

But I don't see how he'll make the club. They filled the bullpen with free agents, essentially, leaving not much room for a lot of guys. And the rotation is set.

So probably back to Memphis for Ryan.
          I'm always right.

We can talk about Woody today too. I didn't have time to toss a player celebration thread up yesterday so today we get two for one.

I think he'll be injured more this year. I think he'll help when he can though. It's just a feeling I have ...

Will you have access to a computer with Internet access at all during the trip?

Woody and Jason Ryan in the same thread? CG, not trying to tell you how to run your railroad, but I'm sensing a lack of focus here.

But perhaps it's appropriate, because I'm thinking Williams might have some injuries this year too, which may open the door for......Jason Ryan! But I hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see Ryan get a fair shot, but not at the expense of Williams.

The Williams trade might be the best that Jocketty ever pulled off, in hindsight. This guy has done everything asked of him since he got here. Good pitcher, good hitter, has been reasonably healthy given his age.
                        I'm always right.

Ryan was one of the guys that I was impressed with last year when I came down to Jupiter and spent a couple days watching the minor league guys.

He strikes me as a Woody Williams type pitcher (interesting that Woody ended up making it into this thread, since they have similar styles). Two-seam and four seam FB that he locates well. Had a slider and change up that he had good command of as well. He's not overpowering and has to be sharp to be effective - his mistakes are going to be hit hard - but it looks like he didn't make many mistakes last season. His fastball is average (at best) velocity wise, but his two-seamer has good movement and sink, and he freezes a lot of guys by changing speeds well.

In my post at the old place, he was one of the guys that I had listed as worth watching in '03, and agree with Kaiser (who doesn't?) that he should have been up last September.

I'd like to see him get a chance, but agree that with all the quality pitchers we have, that it'll be difficult for him to make the team this spring.
