  • PC Question

This is for techies and other pc gurus.

I am using Win98.......and each time I start my pc up, it asks me which setting I want my pc to start with.....Normal, Safe Mode, etc.

Often I will start the PC and leave the room or be busy with other tasks and when I return, the pc is at my desktop in safe mode. How do I get this to stop and just start normal?

Also, at times when I start up, it will go to a complete black screen with a white underscore flashing in top left corner and just remain there forever. It only does this maybe one time out of 20 start ups. It has also done that from time to time when I shut down.

Can anyone help me diagnose this problem? It cant be a virus, I really think its the OS.

    Thanks guys!

Win98 sucks donkey balls. Upgrade, or get a new PC. That's my advice.

There is actually a setting screen you can get to to tell it what the default OS startup mode should be. Or, actually, I think if you get into the BIOS(?) screen you can turn fast boot up on and that should solve the problem, I think. I think it depends on your computer, but if you hit F1 as soon as it starts to boot up it should take you to that BIOS menu.

Sorry Sparrow, I'm fine with doing something myself, but I suck ass at trying to explain to people how to do it.

sparrow - from the start menu, choose run. Type in msconfig. somewhere in there you can select the default startup from a drop down.

As far as the blinking cursor, who knows. Can't help you with that one.

        Start
        Run
        "msconfig", enter
        general tab
        click the Advanced button
        uncheck "Enable Startup menu"
        Apply
        REboot.

I don't know what kind of computer you are running so I will hold off witht he "get a new one" for now.
If your computer can support XP, I'd change right now.

            98 sucks.

              Damn, it was already unchecked!

              Was hoping that was it.

I believe if you perform a hard reset/shutdown or if Windows detects an inproper shutdown then you will receive that menu every time you start up.

Have you attempted to choose normal startup?

Updtate your computer and get all the Win98 shutdown patches. If that's not triggering it, it means your computer is not shutting down properly.

After I go to msconfig, It shows these three options.....Normal, Diagnostic, Selective......

It is currently checked that Selective starts up. Is that what I want?

I'd say you want normal. Selective seems to tell me that you "select" which startup option you want.

You probably want Normal. It's been a while since I've played with win98, so don't trust me on that.

Try Normal....but that shouldn't trigger the boot select screen.

I'd rather run 3.x than ME. It blows the most.
