I actually wouldn't mind what the 49ers are doing if they were spending the money on defense. I think their receivers are probably reliable enough, we'll see about Rattay, and their running back is solid. But instead, they're going to be losing a bunch of defensive players too, including three defensive backs.
They're becoming the Bengals. They've spent the last few days boasting about they'll have at least $14 million in cap space in 2006, the sort of thing the Bengals take pride in.
They claim they're modeling themselves around the Patriots and Eagles. I'd be thrilled with that plan if Terry Donahue was competent.

It's not really an if. Donahue has done nothing to prove any sort of competence. Since taking over for Walsh, he's ignored Walsh's advice, replaced a good coach with a proven track record (Mariucci) with a lousy one with a poor track record (Erickson), taken the major salary cap clean up Walsh did and messed it all up again (leading to this offseason's salary cap purge) and had two pretty uninspiring drafts.
Thus far, Donahue hasn't proven capable of doing anything positive.

007, why are a niners fan?
The 1981 NFC Championship Game ('The Catch')
My brother, in a town that was home to the St. Louis Football Cardinals, was inexplicably, a huge Cowboys fan (and got shit for it as a season ticket holder every game from the fans around us...)
I HATED the Cowboys, so as we were watching that game, to piss him off, I started taking the opposite side and started cheering on the Niners.....
Well, with 'The Catch', it changed everything: from a team I rooted for to just piss of my brother to being a lifelong fan.....
They were my 'second favorite' team till the Cardinals moved in 1988-1989...after that, which is acceptable by Bill Simmons' rules for fans, I became a full-fledged Niners fan since my 'home team' left....
When the Rams came to STL, I was happy STL had a football team again, but the Rams would become a team that I'd watch, but not necessarily root for.....
That aboot sums it up....

Well, as long as you are living by Bill Simmons' guidelines, fine by me.
I hate that tart.
Hey, when your favorite team ups and moves, you gotta do the right thing...

I agree, but not cause that unbiased prick tells us to do so.
