  • Jeffrey Suppan

    Age: 29
    Height: 6-2
    Weight: 220 lbs.
    Bats: Right
    Throws: Right
    Pos: SP

Born: January 2, 1975, Oklahoma City, OK, United States
    Full Name: Jeffrey Scot Suppan
    College: None
    Experience: 9 years
    2003 Salary: $500,000

Today is Jeff Suppan Day. Does anyone know really, definitively how he pronounces his last name? I have a name that can easily be mispronounced and while I don't fly off the handle when it's said wrong, I do notice and have to decide whether to correct the person or not. I think I will ask him, if given the chance, at ST.

Notice his middle name. One t. Like Jockety.

I am pretty okay with him being on the team. I dont' think he's like some of our other pitchers (who aren't here anymore) who will piss in our boots and tell us it's raining. He's worth a shot, right?

I dont' know what kind of pitcher he is, and if anyone knows, I would love it if you told me.

Chris Carpenter Day was a complete success I think. If Jeff Suppan Day's thread is even 56% as good as CC Day, then I will be walking on air, folks.

Let's talk about Jeff, shall we?

          Slu,

I am needing a replacement to post the celebration threads when I am gone on vaca.

          Can you handle it?

I think the Cards became convinced of this guy's worth last year when he absolutely baffled them in a game just prior to the trade deadline. Couldn't acquire him then, which didn't bother me, because the team had so many pitching holes that one guy like Suppan wasn't going to solve them.

Overall, I like the fact he's on the team. Initially, after he was signed, I just wrote him off as another Tomko/Stephenson. Looking at his numbers over time, and especially last year, he's better, considerably, than those clowns. His numbers last year, aside from W-L, weren't that much worse than, say, Russ Ortiz (and before we get into the numbers, realize that I'm saying Suppan's numbers were worse, just not so much that it's something to scream about). So he's not a #1 or #2, but I think this guy could be a legit #3. I anticipate much disagreement about that, but I'm taking a stand here, prospectively.

He's been around for a while now, and while he's not a flamethrower, I suspect that he's got a pretty good idea how to pitch by now. As I say, I've changed my mind about him as I've given it some thought. I think this was a good pickup, especially for the price, for the Cards.
            I'm always right.

The Pirates announcers pronounced it Soup-AHN last season.

He was damn good for Pittsburgh...and god awful for Boston.

And for Kansas City, too, but I'm choosing to ignore that.

                  Okay, thanks Dev.

Since we learned that CC is a groundball pitcher yesterday; do you know if Supp is the same or if he's different?

                  Anyone familiar with his attitude?

The only attitude expectation and requirement I have is that he not be like Tomko or Stephenson in regards to idiocy after bad games and I would like to see him cover first and stuff when necessary.

                    He's an ok pickup -- for a 4th starter.

I like him for the reasons Kaiser mentioned, but I particularly like the fact that he is adept at eating innings.

That's something this team sorely needed in the past, and looking at the rotation, I think we'll need in the future.

He would have been a TREMENDOUS pickup for the Cardinals if we would have also gotten a 1-3 starter.

Kaiser: I was just looking at last year with my Boston/Pittsburgh comment...but yes, he was pretty bad for Kansas City. Really, the only truly extended good stretch of his career was the four months with Pittsburgh last year.

CG: Suppan needs a good defense behind him because he doesn't strike out many. Doesn't walk all that many either. Doesn't throw terribly hard. More of a ground ball pitcher.

This is a hard assignment, CG. It's hard to describe Jeff as a pitcher and only say positive things.

He was pretty good against righthanders last year (.239, .397 slg). Let's not talk about what lefties did to him, OK?

The Cubs are now an almost exclusively right-handed hitting team, aren't they? I mean, once Corey Patterson goes down with his annual injury, they will only have Todd Walker among their everyday players who hits from the left side. So that's a matchup that might work out.

Other than that, we have to cross our fingers and hope the umpires give him the corners.

Sup might do well despite Gollum. We'll see, Hockey.

                              Joe,

One doesn't have to be all over positive. Noting a player's problems with their position or batting or anything to do with the game is fine. Calling someone a worthless piece of crap is the kind of thing I like to see these threads avoid.

I mean, come on, the players read this stuff and I don't want them thinking we all hate them or something. We want to be positive and optimistic, but not too head in teh clouds, you know? Critiquing or hoping that a player improves in some aspects is A-OK with me (and them).
