Does he have better stuff than others? Yes, so you could say he gives the NL a better chance of winning. However, seeing that this is an exhibition to reward players for their first half performances, no, he doesn't deserve to be there over guys with less stuff.

Would you leave him off at the risk of costing the Cards a game 7 at home in the WS?

The alternatives were listed earlier in the thread. My question is, when making a list of pitchers capable of being on the NL rosters, does Strasburg give the NL a better chance of winning?

For ratings alone, I don't see how you leave him off the roster. Plus, as Kah noted, I'd love to see him pitch against the AL's best. Hell, I'd just love to see him pitch -- which I haven't yet.

For the record...I'd like to see Stras face better offenses than Pittsburgh, Cleveland, the White Sox, and the Royals before I call him one of the top pitchers in the major leagues...

And yes, I know the Royals have the highest team batting average in the majors, but they are terrible at producing runs.

If this guy wasn't so media hyped, came up and put the numbers up he has in his first 4 starts...you wouldn't be hearing anyone clamor for him to be on the roster...

Well, duh. If he had fifteen starts we'd have a much more definitive idea of what kind of pitcher he really is. He's overhyped because he's a bigtime strikeout pitcher, ESPN pushes so hard for the flavor of the month, etc.

I need to see more. Even though there's little doubt that there will be big pressure on Charlie Manuel to annoint him. I mean appoint him.

I'm not sure he's overhyped one bit. He's actually this good.

Yes, he's a K guy, but he also has one of the major's best BB/9, BB/K, and WHIP.

He's been nothing short of amazing so far. Hitters are literally completely guessing out there.

That's entirely possible. I don't know yet, and am unimpressed by his competition to this point (Pirates, Royals, etc.).

He may be absolutely great, but I don't know after about 20 innings against mediocre (or worse) competition.

...against the Pirates, Royals, White Sox, and Indians...

He may very well be this good(although, I doubt he's quite THIS good), but he hasn't exactly faced good teams yet...plenty of pitchers have come into the league and dominated early on in their careers...and turned to shit real quick.

In all likelihood, including that list, he'd be taking the place of a reliever - if that's the case, he's under some consideration; if it's solely that list and perhaps another starter or two, no, I don't think he does...

the argument that all players are playing to win because of HFA is weak at best. you really believe the choices from HOU, CHI, PIT, ARI, WAS or any of the AL teams that know they are out of teh playoffs are playing to get their team home field advantage in the WS?

there are prolly about 12-15 guys on each roster that believe they are playing to get their team hfa. maybe a little better than half....at best, no more than two-thirds. the rest are there and couldn't give a shit who gets hfa, cause it won't affect them.

sorry, its still an exhibition. and no, Strasburg hasn't earned the right to go. And even if he did, why would he care, WAS is too far out of it to worry aboot hfa. they need to concern themselves to getting out of the basement of their own division first.

Yeah, the "sample size" folks are forgetting that there will be relief pitchers in this game with fewer IP.

apropos of nothing, Strasburg has 75 IP left in the season before the Nats shut him down, give or take some innings...
