• Blues officially announce re-signing of Colaiacovo

The St. Louis Blues have confirmed what numerous media outlets have been stating over the last few days: the club has officially announced the re-signing of defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo to a two-year deal, worth an estimated $4.25 million.

Via the team's press release, Colaiacovo is thrilled to remain with the Blues.

“I've said all along that St. Louis was the only place that I wanted to play,” said Colaiacovo. “Management has put together an exciting team and I wish the season started tomorrow.”
Colaiacovo, acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs along with recent re-signee Alex Steen in November 2008, tallied 32 points (seven goals, 25 assists) in a career-high 67 games.

The signing of Colaiacovo, 27, wraps up a rather busy day for organization after announcing the signings of goaltender Jaroslav Halak and enforcer Cam Janssen to new deals.

Fuck the stove. I want the oven turned on and then I'm climbing inside it.

There is a great, deep group of UFA defenseman available...that's why I have a hard time committing major dollars to a guy like Colaiacovo...

Among the forwards the only UFAs I'm interested in:

      Marleau, Kovalchuk, Plekanec

Hopefully JD and Armstrong can get creative and not give Mason a multiyear deal by default because they don't know what else to do.

Blues UFAs: Kariya, Tkachuk, Winchester, Armstrong, Colaiacovo, Sydor, Weaver, Mason
All of these guys can go and I wouldn't miss them.

Weaver is ok, but he's nothing special...if he's expecting a significant raise you gotta let him go.

Weaver has played very well since the olympic break. I wouldn't mind keeping him, actually - provided the price was right.

Blues RFAs: Steen, Perron, King, Janssen, D'Agostini, Johnson, Strachan, Junland
Perron, Steen, and EJ will all be back.

D'Agostini will be back, you don't trade a prospect for a guy who walks 3-4 months later when you are in the Blues situation.

No need to have both King and Janssen on the team, one needs to be dealt.

Let Strachan go somewhere where he can maybe have a chance to crack a lineup.

I think there is a pretty good chance that the Blues will be unable to convince one of the mega-UFAs to sign here.

They may be forced to make a trade to try and bring in some firepower. One of the young guys may have to be sacrificed. I wouldn't be surprised it if it isn't Perron quite frankly. But that is just my hunch.

They might even have to role the dice and pull the trigger on a player that some team wants to dump because they overpaid and want some room to maneuver (see NYR dealing Gomez).

Weaver was dogshit tonight, but, seventh defensemen don't get big raises. I'm sure we can sign him for 600k-ish.

Not sure we have room for Colaiacovo assuming Petro is here full time. We really, really need to deal Brewer or Jackman.

Also, the thing that scares me, is Perron and Johnson are going to follow Backes' lead if necessary and use an offer sheet to get what they want. Just watch.

His agent is already releasing numbers to the press about how he is one of the top PKers in the NHL...It's pretty obvious the intention is to get paid.

The Blues just need to go young...if they can sign one of the elite FA's great...but I would not force anything in the FA market because they feel like they HAVE to sign a veteran.

The Blues do have a lot of young players (with more coming), but most of them have played multiple seasons in the NHL now...they should be able to handle it.

Blues need goal scorers and they need a number one center-They need Marleau.

Yeah I agree. The Blues need a #1 in the worst way. It will have a ripple effect of the team talent wise.

I have this sinking feeling that the blues will throw a ton of money at someone like Kovulchuk only to have him pull an Andruw Jones

The only UFA's who will get gigantic deals are Kovalchuk and probably Marleau (but even he won't get Kovalchuk money), so it's one or the other.

Marleau would fit in here perfectly. Ergo it's not going to happen. Plekanec is iffy - I really don't see him as a top-flight goal scorer, and that is definitely priority #1 for this club right now.

Plekanec doesn't fit what the Blues need to a T or anything, but he's a good center whose best years are probably still in front of him.

He would seem to be a much more realistic possibility than Marleau or Kovalchuk.

Everything I've read indicates that San Jose wants and has the space available to resign Marleau.

Sure you want an elite goal scorer, but short of trading Perron and Pietrangelo for like Staal or something of that nature (just an example), I'm not sure where that player is coming from.

They're going to have to prudently select a package of youngsters to part with in a deal...it's inevitable
